Hancock Prospecting pulls netball support: Announcement comes after Australian Diamonds players raised concerns

Hancock Prospecting has issued a statement announcing it was "regrettably" withdrawing its netball support, after Australian Diamonds players raised concerns about the sponsorship.

Gina Rinehart's mining company Hancock Prospecting has announced it is withdrawing its netball support less than a month after it was announced as a high performance program partner of the Australian Diamonds.

The company issued a statement on Saturday "regrettably" announcing the decision, after Diamonds players recently raised concerns about the sponsorship.

The withdrawal from the reported $15 million deal - touted by Netball Australia in late September as "a major investment for our sport" - is a financial blow to the organisation which posted a $4.4 million loss in the 2021 financial year.

"Hancock and Roy Hill do not wish to add to Netball's disunity problems, and accordingly Hancock has advised Netball Australia... that it has withdrawn from its proposed funding partnership effective immediately," the Hancock Prospecting statement said.

Hancock Prospecting slams ‘virtue signalling’ after tearing up $15 million netball sponsorship

Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting has issued a blistering statement slamming “virtue signalling” by sports teams after sensationally tearing up its $15 million netball deal.

The mining giant announced on Saturday that it had decided to “regrettably withdraw” its proposed partnerships with Netball Australia and Netball WA, after revelations last weekend that Diamonds players had concerns about wearing a team uniform that included sponsorship branding from Ms Rinehart’s company.

Quote:
Indigenous player Donnell Wallam, who is line to make her Diamonds debut in the upcoming series against England, was said to be uncomfortable wearing a uniform with the Hancock Prospecting logo, reportedly due to comments made by Ms Rinehart’s father Lang Hancock in the 1980s.

He infamously suggested in 1984 that Indigenous Australians should be sterilised to “breed themselves out” in coming years.

After a week of controversy, Hancock Prospecting finally pulled the plug, saying in a statement on Saturday that it had “not been made aware” of the issues between Netball Australia and the Players Association and did “not wish to add to Netball’s disunity problems”.

A rather silly thing to make a stance over. Gina is not her father.

I think the Diamonds may have made a fatal error here. Women's netball only survives through donations.

Ms Hancock makes quite substantial endowments to indigenous organisations.

Around $300,000,000 over a 4(?) year term?

Now, the team may go under if they don't find another sponsor.
This is the problem with uneducated/ill-informed virtue-signalling activists.

Agreed, but its also self-correcting is it not?
Ms Hancock has rightly punished Netball Australia and they will learn to be less "educated" when reacting to situations that arise.

We see things differently.

Ms Hancock is a woman of integrity, and there is absolutely nothing I can see that would suggest she was acting vengefully.
As such, to me, the word "punished" is not applicable. ;)

Her philanthropy was treated with disrespect.
Why should she keep patronising ungrateful people?

Also, consider:
She did not act capriciously. She didn't end the sponsorship immediately.
She provided a grace period of (IIRC) 4 months for the organisation to find another sponsor.

"The lady is above reproach." 8)

yeah so....she withdrew $15million sponsorship from Netball Australia. It was to teach them a lesson. That's punishment.

Interesting fallout from the Hancock saga

Popular indigenous ABC sports presenter Tony Armstrong has called in police after he received racist threats for criticising Gina Hanckock.
https://www.news.com.au/sport/australia ... ad3abb752a

Calculated Chess move from Gina Rinhart. She saves $15m and get's free publicity for Hancock enterprises, Australian taxpayers have to bail out Netball Australia (so out of our pockets) and indigenous people get racist threats.

So the only winner out of this is Gina Rinheart.
