People of color face higher risk of flu hospitalization as U.S. faces potentially severe season, CDC says

Quote:
People of color are hospitalized with the flu at far higher rates than white Americans, according to a large multiyear study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC study, published Tuesday, looked at flu hospitalizations among adults from 2009 through last year using data from its flu surveillance network that includes more than 70 counties across 14 states.

Hospitalizations were 80% higher among Black adults than white adults, 30% higher among Native Americans and 20% higher among Hispanics, according to CDC data.

Vaccination rates were lower among people of color than white adults. During last year’s flu season, vaccination coverage among white adults was 54% compared with 38% for Hispanics, 41% for Native Americans and 42% for Black adults.

CDC officials, in a call with reporters Tuesday, said lower vaccination rates among people of color are due to poorer access to health care, distrust of physicians and the government due to historical discrimination and missed opportunities to get people immunized when they do go to the doctor.

People of color also often face poorer and more crowded housing conditions and more chronic illnesses which makes hospitalization from the flu more likely, officials said.

Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, influenza was one of the most challenging respiratory diseases that hospitals faced every year. Flu seasons vary in their severity depending on the strain of the virus and the efficacy of the vaccines. Over the past decade, 9 million to 41 million people have fallen ill every year, 140,000 to 170,000 individuals have been hospitalized and 12,000 to 52,000 have died annually, according to CDC data.

Carla Black, a CDC epidemiologist, told reporters on Tuesday that the flu is difficult to forecast, but the U.S. could be facing one of the worst seasons since the Covid pandemic began in March 2020.

The effectiveness of flu shots varies from year to year, though they are usually 40% to 60% effective at preventing illness, Black said. “Even people who do get sick are less likely to have severe outcomes like hospitalization and death,” she said.

Dr. Ashish Jha, the White House Covid task force leader, has called for all Americans who are eligible to get both their Covid omicron booster as well as their flu shot as soon as possible.

Aren't people of Eurasian descent simply more adapted to flu?
That would mean, vaccines should be particularily recommended to Black, Native and Pacific adults, to make up for this.

I've never actually heard nor read anything about people of non-European descent being more susceptible to the effects of influenza viruses. I believe in the socioeconomic explanation.

Me, too.

Due to historic 'red lining,' and other practices that forced non-whites to live in more.. undesirable areas - polluted areas, peoples' health is affected. Further, income disparity means not being able to afford to eat high quality healthy food.. and without that, peoples' health suffers. (including immune systems.) Even today there are areas with 'food deserts,' where there are no grocery stores for 10's of miles, only dollar stores and fast food.. so people eat garbage and feel like garbage.

Surely the lack of trust in the medical system and resulting vaccine hesitancy contributes as well, but there are are more factors at play than Just whether or not someone got a flu shot. I recall seeing stats before about increased rates of obesity, diabetes, and other health issues that result in shorter lifespans, too. It's a complex multi-faceted problem - but Maybe the lack of vaccination is a large contributor.

POC are more likely to live in crowded situations, many family members , multiple generations, in one residence .It would spread quicker in close conditions where sick people can’t isolate from the rest of the family.

Maybe you're right - flu decimated various populations when freshly carried from Europe but a few centuries could have even this effect out - while in USA, socioeconomic factors are very obvious.

This is old news

Simply being black knocks 10 years of your life. Having a weakened immune system makes you susceptible to viruses.

I have read much about the 1918 flu pandemic. Groups of people with the greatest isolation from the world population were the most likely to die. If you lived in the big city you were likely exposed to the flu repeatedly and did better in 1918. There was a native American community in Alaska that was completed wiped out due to a mailman bringing in the virus. THINK ABOUT THAT ANTI-VAXERS.

All humans are racist, whether they admit it or not. And in the future we'll have a generation of people who all have autoimmune diseases and dangerous allergies, and they'll have to live like the Bubble Boy because a sniffle will end up killing them, because people are being *too* clean and yet taking showers only once or twice a week is seen as very wrong and disgusting. Humanity is hopeless. Have a nice day. :D

Perfectly said...

There are much higher incidences of TB in migrant populations living in close quarters as well. Non-compliance with medications is also a problem which is why the public health departments have mobile clinics and case management, many of those nurses administer or observe medication administration.

My formal education is in nursing and I must say that I no longer trust the medical profession, mostly because of the way Covid patients were treated in the hospitals. The rolling out of Covid vaxx when there's no possible way it could go the trails, receive the raw data and extrapolate the findings in the time they had prior to releasing it to the public. FDA approval means nothing, cigarettes were once FDA approved. So, I'm with the POC. I'm not getting a damn thing from the healthcare providers.
