That really depends on whether or not she denies the similarity.
She may agree that some things Mussolini did were wrong.
Ask her and see what she says.

But I am not sure she believes in what she said when she was young and dumb.

She's playing politics. She is laundering her personal far right beliefs the same way an organised criminal syndicate launders the proceeds of crime to make herself look a legit statesman/woman.

The groups in Italy she was associated with would deploy gangs who wander the streets looking to harass anyone looks African (Hitler's brownshirts did literally the same thing to Jews in the 1930s). Her intention is to create a climate of fear for Africans so they choose to leave Italy.

What concerns me more is why people espousing clearly racist views running for office in both the US and Europe are seen by mainstream normal people as acceptable role models/leaders.

It looks like the lessons of the fascist experiment in Italy were not learned and people are falling for the same kind of rubbish all over again.
