Cambodia scams: Lured and trapped into slavery

Wow. Shady s**t. Makes sense that crime pivoted to online scams during covid. Kinda crazy that Cambodian officials are complicit.. buuuut, threats + bribes in a relatively poor country = criminals can get away with murder.

I wonder if things will continue as business as usual, or if those in charge will relocate their fraud farms to some other country with even looser regulations.. or, if the crime syndicates will figure out a way to simply decentralize their operations and blackmail people online and have them work their scams from home Or face the threat of ____ or ____ happening. Never know, could evolve to that.. after all, people have gotten others to do worse things than work scam jobs via remote blackmail.

What a crazy world we live in. Technology gives so much.. but then also creates entire new avenues for crime & exploitation. Makes me want to join some hippies in unplugging and living off the land and never even knowing about this stuff sometimes.

It is a wonder they would need to try to enslave people from other countries to do internet scams. Those could be done from anywhere.

My brother lives there, but thankfully not like this.

Thats interesting. How did he end up there?

Him and his gf moved there a few years ago, I'm not really sure what drew them.

Maybe a job ad that sounded too good to be true ?

I don't think he had any job lined up when he moved. He's had a bunch of jobs since arriving though, from being involved with municipal planning to being a courier.
