Black Lives Matter Org Praises Hamas, Sparks Backlash

Quote:
Supporters of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement expressed distaste for the organization on Tuesday after a BLM chapter shared a statement supporting Palestinian people.

In a statement posted on social media, the BLM Grassroots chapter responded to the ongoing fighting between Hamas militants and Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) saying, "As the world is faced with deep questions about self-determination, as well all desire and pray for a world of peace, we must stand unwaveringly on the side of the oppressed. When a people have been subject to decades of apartheid and unimaginable violence, their resistance must not be condemned, but understood as a desperate act of self-defense."

"Black Lives Matter Grassroots stands in solidarity with our Palestinian family who are currently resisting 57 years of settler colonialism and apartheid. As Black people continue the fight to end militarism and mass incarcerations in our own communities, let us understand the resistance in Palestine as an attempt to tear down the gates of the world's biggest open air prison," the statement said. "As a radical Black organization grounded in abolitionist ideals, we see clear parallels between Black and Palestinian people."

Shortly after the statement was issued, a number of other social media users spoke out against Black Lives Matter.

Wow, I used to support BLM. I don't know if I can anymore. Do you guys even know what happened?" X user Aryeh Levine wrote.

Wow I've supported this movement from the beginning. Phone calls. Emails. Money. Wow wow. Barbaric murders. Women children raped and paraded named. infants taken from there parents. Elderly murdered lived on Facebook. Raped and beaten women being sat on and spat on. That's justified? I'm for human life. Whatever you are. Blown away," one comment said.

Another comment said, "As someone who has followed and supported this account for a long time, I find this post to be incredibly miseducated. I do not condone the way that the Palestinian people are treated, but this is not their fight. This is an act of aggression by an antisemitic terrorist organization, Hamas, that pre-exists the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. You can stand up against terrorists and still support a peaceful solution to the conflict in Gaza. Your explanation of what is currently happening is incredibly off base and, quite frankly, offensive."

Other social media users also responded to a post from BLM Chicago that said "I stand with Palestine."

Former White House official Ari Fleischer wrote, "This is disgusting. BLM celebrates murder. Never forget this."

X user Aviva Klompas wrote, "Utterly sickening from Black Lives Matter in Chicago. And they have used an image of a paraglider like the ones who swooped into an Israeli music festival and murdered, raped, mutilated, and paraded beaten civilians back to Gaza."

This is one BLM chapter, not the entire BLM movement. Let's wait and see what, if anything, other BLM chapters have to say, and also the BLM org as a whole.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation has not condemned the posting by the Chicago org.

There are a few reports from social media sources that BLM Chicago has deleted their tweet.

That said based on the the global network not saying anything about the Louisville chapter raising bail money for a suspect that shot at a Jewish mayoral candidate that posted support for a Black Hebrews like group I don’t suspect the global organization or other chapters will say anything. We will see.

And in the title to the OP I specifically said one chapter.

BLM chapters across the US side with Palestinians amid Hamas massacre of Israelis

Both BLM Chicago and BLM Washington D.C. took down the posts following intense publish backlash.

I can see their point. They didn’t exactly say they were pro Hamas terrorist acts, but that they empathize with the imprisoned melanated.

I think there’s also some ignorance in play here. This BLM chapter likely doesn’t know the distinction/cross over between Hamas and Palestinians nor the history of Hamas etc etc so are likely making assumptions that Hamas = Palestinians and their causes and interests are one in the same and so on. But as someone’s comment points out in the article, there’s more complicated histories to all parties involved.

But I get this BLM chapter’s point. This is what happens when you put a couple Million people in an oppressure cooker and turn up the heat. Some people are eventually gonna blow.

The statement (as quoted above) doesn't mention Hamas or their most recent attacks. It merely supports the Palestinian right of resistance to occupation, in generalised terms. They could be referring to Hamas i suppose but it's inconclusive,

Considering the timing many if not most are concluding resistance refers to terrorism.

I'd be skeptical of the motives of this unquantifiable many. As many have an agenda that is pro Israel, anti BLM or in some cases, both.

The Chicago BLM chapter, as well as many other progressive groups, have included imagery of para-gliders in their statements, which is impossible to construe as anything other than support for Hamas generally and this latest attack in particular.

Not just them, there's a real morbid comedy in seeing various LGBT+ groups rallying with signs like "queers for Palestine!" knowing what kind of reception they'd get from the people they're supporting.

The kids marching around in these protests might be too young to remember what ISIS did to LGBTQI+ people
HAMAS, Hezbollah, Islamic brotherhood, Taliban or ISIS...doesn't bode well for coming out of the closet

Eh, I sadly personally know quite a few of these people, they're middle aged like me, they're just captured by an ideology that flattens everything into simplistic oppressor and oppressed categories and sort of breaks down when their designated oppression totems are themselves problematic. There's a really clear example going on right now in iirc Michigan, where leftists cheered a Muslim majority city council getting elected, only to be shocked when they weren't on board with all the LGBT+ stuff.

Not forgetting recent new members in the brotherhood - Boko Haram in Nigeria and Abu Sayyaff in the Philippines

As long as I have lived America has been criticized for being myopic in its view of the world with plenty of merit. This is what is going on here, they are viewing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the lens of America’s racial politics.

Precisely, and what's more, I've been seeing more and more non-Americans trying to force American style social justice rhetoric and tropes into their own regions, with very strange results, e.g. using the term "BIPOC" in the UK.
