An 18-year-old hacker who leaked clips of a forthcoming Grand Theft Auto (GTA) game has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order.

Arion Kurtaj from Oxford, who is autistic, was a key member of international gang Lapsus$.

The gang's attacks on tech giants including Uber, Nvidia and Rockstar Games cost the firms nearly $10m.

The judge said Kurtaj's skills and desire to commit cyber-crime meant he remained a high risk to the public.

He will remain at a secure hospital for life unless doctors deem him no longer a danger.

I think he should contribute to society in an environment that is more suitable for him

I think he's probably where he needs to be if he wants to use his skills for illegal ends...autistic or not.

The clincher for him his he has publicly declared that he will continue his hacking efforts after his release from custody, doesn't look like he'll be free to do that anytime soon. That certainly doesn't make him a genius . In point of fact, he is being held precisely because he isn't intellectually fit to stand a criminal trial. That doesn't sound like most geniuses out there at all.

Its another case of teenagers doing really stupid things. He may take a more mature view of the matter in time.

A criminal idiot savant.

Both morally and mentally... a complete and total imbecile.
But with this incredible skill.

Not only doesnt know right from wrong, he doesnt even know self interest from anti self interest. And just declares his eagerness to go back to crime.

I agree that he ought to be incarcerated (for his own and society's protection).

In theory with enough oversite and supervision his talents could be turned to ...good. As with Leonardo Di Caprio's character in "Catch Me If You Can". Maybe they could use him catch and defend systems against other hackers.

But for the moment he needs to be confined where he is.
