Actually this is old news. According to the Malaysian Indian community (I know through my wife) apparently East Germany has always been a no-go destination to live/work. After the fall of the soviet union many Indians tried to find work in East germany and stories abounded of shops getting firebombed and people getting attacked on the streets and the police doing nothing.

A distant relative of my wife travelled to east germany back in the 1990s and he and his g/f were on a train and never arrived at their destination. despite attempts by the parents and numerous searches, they had simply vanished. the police were not interested and the parents were quietly told by locals that skinheads were probably involved.
