Smiling against your will at work is dangerous for your health

I always hated doing that

I was once fired from a waitressing job because...."You do not smile enough and need to get a perm"

The study did seem a little odd to me. I would say that it wasn't the smiling that was causing the health issues but being abused by people and neither being able to "fight nor flight". Being attacked releasing adrenalin and then not being allowed to do either of those normal responses seems very unhealthy. I think that is probably true for anyone in any such situation, pparticularly kids who are not allowed to "talk back" in school or at home with adults. I know it certainly made my childhoood a niightmare because I could not "defend" myself by explaining why I had done something or allowed to leave the room to expell all that extra energy. Guess it was ood practice for working a job because those aren't options there either.

My manager must have really bad health then due to that omnipresent fake grin on her face.

I have never been much of a smiler, though I use the smilies in my posts to indicate some measure of contentment. But I can now understand the term 'grin and bear it' as being a detriment to health and well being.

To me, most people who smile look like they are baring their teeth! Except I like Mr. Green.

I hated service jobs. They dehumanize you and make you feel like less than nothing, which is about how much you're paid too.

Nonsense. They are the epitome and apogee of the capitalist system. They wouldn't exist if they weren't the best thing possible.

I view capitalism as an economic form of Darwinism. "Survival of the fittest" is what this horrid system amounts too. I want it to change, but I don't know to what. Existing options either don't work historically or suck equally. I just hate being a doormat and I want college education to be free for everyone.

You sound like a socialist to me. They probably got to you with the 'free' public libraries.

With Republican inspired tax cutting fervor, the stickers at public universities are rising fast. Here in Florida, the main university is going to cut $70 million from the budget, reduce by 4000 the number of students enrolled, and raise tuition and fees 19%. This from a governor who promised that his tax cut plans would not negatively affect higher education.

Socialism is a maybe. It could be better also. It depends who's in charge. All societies eventually have classes of people which are looked down upon for their station in life, so no system can truly be perfect. But I would like a system where all people are equally valuable.

So - are you in favor of the $7.25 minimum wage law? It may make some service jobs more tolerable (and raises the wage floor for about 40% of workers - not just those on minimum wage).

The lowest I have been paid is $7.00, and that was at McDonald's. An extra quarter wouldn't make a difference. What I find disgusting is that people who work on their feet get paid the least whereas people who sit on their butt all day get paid the most.

Also, businesses wont increase wages for everyone. Those already beyond the new minimum will either remain where they're at OR get lowered to compensate for the other worker's increase. Jobs that pay little now will just cut staff rather than lose money.

Economics is a complex subject. That is why I don't know WHAT capitalism should be replaced by, only that it sucks for the financially disadvantaged. There are many complex issues to be addressed, hopefully by a team of mathematicians...
