With some of the crazy spiders they have in Australia, they're worried about a brown recluse?

Although I have to say, you can't reverse necrotized flesh with antivenom, so I'd be pretty worried.

With all of the other lethal critters in Australia, why would someone worry about this one even if it were a real threat? As much as I like Australian people, I don't think I would care too much to live in Australia. In most places around the world humans evoke a certain amount of respect from animals. In Australia, humans are just another item on the menu.

Article is not entirely accurate. While the email is a hoax, and the picture is not a brown recluse spider bite, a minority of brown recluse spider bites can turn into a necrotic ulcer, which eventually falls off, leaving a scar. Most brown recluse spider bites heal nicely with no scaring.

But, like always, watch out for secondary infections.

snopes.com says this is a HOAX ! !!

In other news, its story time.

I got bit by a brown recluse on my right arm (I live in north alabama). The whole forearm swelled up about 1-1.5 inches. I have minor swelling over the rest of my body - eyelids swelled so much that I couldnt open my eyes (has happened before... maybe I just have fat eyelids?) and I couldnt fit my feet in my shoes.

It went down over the weekend and now I have a small white scar where it bit me. Oddly, that area is still slightly larger then on the other arm...

Not that I am worried by it. It makes me more salient. I tend to find distinguishing oddities about a person more intriguing then repulsive. One of my favorite physical attributes about an ex I had was these huge scars she had on the inside of each leg, from ankle to hip (in case you are concerned, my other favorite details about her body were quite normal). She was self conscious and I think my acceptance and appreciation of the beauty of difference went a long way towards healing that wound.

Wow I did a good job of going off topic there.

the reason for your arm to still be larger is probably internal damage/scarring, i've got odd bumps here and there from similar incidents and that's the only logical reason i can come up with.

about the article, these sorts of hoax's happen all the time but the ones that cause worry and concern spread quicker. i recently got one telling me msn was going to cancel all inactive users unless they sent a certain e-mail to several others... the fear of loosing your instant messenger to some is as bad as loosing a hand to others.
