In the past we would have been seers, shaman, nuns, bards, saints, and patronized artists and poets... without any expectation to conform to neurotypical standards. We did quite well, I think.

Agreed.

The traits that are looked for in potential novice shaman are eccentricities such as 'being off in their own world', social isolation, unusual depth of insight, ability to enter a trance like state ... sound like anyone you know?

Wow that's quite a lot of things to talk about...
Okay I made this topic because I became more curious after I formed my own Aspie group in Singapore. My members alls became friends with each other and it was a lively community just hit with a recent lack of activity. [That aside]

In singapore or Asia, Aspies are dumbed down by their education system. But in the West or more liberal societies, they at least find a niche in society even if they do not become famous Aspies like Temple Grandin or Satoshi Tajiri. Most famous Aspies like say Temple Grandin, Einstein, Nicola Tesla.etc, as one members pointed out; that most of them are westerners and almost no Asian aspies made it famous.

With that aside, some members have wondered if the problem of Aspies having issues with life; started only in modern day or has it happened in the past? Or is it a society-based problem?

Most Aspies are actually very easy to spot given the sharp, judgmental eyes of NTs. It's like spotting a Down Syndrome kid out of a herd of a hundred people. Given this fact, how is it possible for people with autism and aspergers before Temple Grandin's time to be able to do great things, find a living, get married, while modern Aspies are struggling to find a living in the case of aspies in Singapore. Aspies here are most likely computer addicts wasting their lives away.

I guess Asperger's who could survive in the past were those who had talents that can make money for living or were married housewives, rich people.

Some people in the past killed themselves even though they had special talents and became famous for them.I guess some of them are suspected Asperger's/high functioning autism today.

Through hard work and sheer determination.

True but it is useless if society does not give them the chance to shine in the first place. NTs are definitely capable of doing such things like say preventing that Aspie from getting hired or deprive him of education opportunities..

I'm not sure how many Aspie of decades if not centuries survived maybe, in some instances their peculiar quirks and mannerisms might have been overlooked.Considering the fact, if one had been living in Europe 1500's you could be rest assured you'd be seen as a heretic of possible witchcraft however this is mere conjecture on my part alone.. Personally, I feel there has been some Aspies whom have managed to overcome some difficulties here and to exist in a near-normal life as was possible back in such times.. Honestly, I'd wanted to live around the 1830's Northwest territories of America's in that there might be a possible existence with having Aspergers yet, I'd be able to call something home though living amongst the indigenous native american populations..

Just my absurd and outlandish thoughts on this subject..
