This is my go-to song anytime I'm feeling down. It never fails first to make me cry, and then to make me smile. It is sad, but I find it strangely empowering.

this is one of the few songs i have ever heard which i consider "sad".

when i was about 8, i saw an old mangy dog trotting along the road, and it seemed to me that he was not "owned" (cared about) by anyone, and i saw him from the farmhouse which was a very long way from the road he was trotting along, and from that vantage point i could see about 1.5 miles of road.
i got the binoculars and i watched him as he was trotting along, and i developed a very severe sense of sadness about him. i thought "you really are someone. no one cares about whether you exist or not, but now i do although i will never see you again".

a few days later i heard this song, and my mind appropriated it to the dog i saw, and it filled me with a mixture of sadness and love for him. i imagined the words were about him. but more powerful by far than the words was the melody. the melody of this song is very easy for me to understand.

yes the prevailing attitude to this type of song is maybe that is is a country music song sung by a hick, but i do not care about prevailing attitudes. it is actually a good song and i do not see it as a "country and western" song. i dislike "country and western" stuff.

to me, this is just a song about that lonely but determined little disheveled dog who seemed to be overlooked by the world as he pressed on through his life.

p.s
the visual content in this clip is just an amateurs attempt to portray a montage of sorts to depict the song. it is not particularly good (but it is also not atrociously bad). the real value is in the melody.

Favorite song ever possibly. I say this about every song, but this one I mean it. I saw it live, and was so shocked I could not blink the whole time. But yes, quite sad.

the lines that get me every time....

what if i am never thrown that rope?
what if this tear in my side just pours and pours and pours.
i wonder if they've noticed i'm not around?
the loss of a lonely man never makes much of a sound.

I probably should have gotten over listening to ridiculously angsty music like this about 15 years ago.

These all make me think I've particular people I've lost and I can't listen to them without crying. So ... I tend not to listen to them much.

Anything by Journey sounds really sad to me for some reason, but this song especially. I think a lot of this has to do with this girl I knew a long time ago, who loved Journey.

Wish you were here was my class song. Very depressing to hear.
