If you've read my thread on PSD's(Psychiatric Service Dogs)in the General Autism Forum, you would know that I am TRYING to get a PSD.Well,we found a good one: The Canine Companions for Independance in the Southeast region. Well,I emailed them and asked them about PSD's and told them my diagnosis. They said that they didn't train or place PSD's but they DID do dogs that assist people with Autism.

IF I get an Autism Assistance Dog,would I be able to take the dog ANYWHERE with me and would I be able to use the dog by myself and WITHOUT a third person?

This looks like a great site: http://www.4pawsforability.org/autismdogs.htm

You could write to them, and they could probably answer any of those questions for you.

GOOD NEWS!! ! GOOD NEWS!! !

I called CCI Southeast Region today, and they are sending an application packet to my address. They said that because of my age and maturity level that I CAN use the dog by myself and I CAN take the dog into public places with me.

I'm so happy! I hope I get accepted! KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED!

i dont mean to sound like i think you dont need a service dog, but what exactly will the dog do for you that you cant do yourself? arent service dogs for people that have a hard time seeing or have seizures or something? is the dog just for friendship?

Those are great breeds; I'd especially love a Chocolate Lab.

Guide Dogs- For blind people

Hearing dogs- For deaf people

Mobility Service- For people in wheelchairs

Seizure Response/Alert Dog- For people withy epilepsy

PSYCHIATRIC SERIVCE- FOR MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE

I'm,however, getting an Autism Assistance Dog that can go everywhere with me. Since autistic people have SOME/ALOT of things in common but,for the most part, are different from each other this dog will be trained to fit my needs.

I'm perfectly healthy and I manage well for the most part, but I DO have limitations, such as socializing. Autism/Asperger's dogs are mainly social dogs and companion dogs, but they CAN do things like helping with sensory overloads/meltdowns,remind you to take meds, wake you up at a certain time and a number of other things.I will be able to take this dog ANYHWERE with me; it is a special type of service dog.

I like to wrap my arms around them and press my face up against them while going: shmoogie shmoogie! shmoogie!! shmoogie!! ! (I'm on a first name basis with the most prominent local plastic surgeon in our area.)

If only I didn't already have a cat..... The good news is that the cat I do have is just about as crazy as I am, so it is a pretty good fit.
