Moving House - Struggling
Hi,
I'm about to move house on Wednesday this week. I feel almost paralysed with stress. I'm scared of doing something wrong legally. I'm scared of not doing or saying the right thing with the removers and the decorators when we get in. I'm scared of the plan falling through for some reason and I'm worried about my son who is stressed about it and needs me to be calm and confident which I don't feel at all.
Any advice?
Thanks, Jo

I've moved at least a dozen times; as a student, as a couple, and with a partner and three children many times. It's always very stressful. To remove some stress, keep meals very simple. If you have one big moving van, have your bedding loaded last and thus taken out first. Is it possible to have your child familiar with where he will be moving? Allow the child to make some decisions so they do not feel so powerless, how to arrange their space or maybe a new comforter for their bed. Then have someone trustworthy take care of the child so you can focus on the actual day of the move. Even after the main stress of the move has passed children are still stressed until they feel more at home in the new place (and so are grownups!) Mine have at times been very trying behaviourally but if you can maintain your patience and break up the work with getting out and playing all will settle back into place.
The only way I can lessen my stress is by organizing and making lists. I sometimes even write down what I want to say. I have a list for each day. If there is some law you are concerned about then Google some research or make some calls. It feels much better to know than to wonder fearfully. I might also call the movers and decorators today to confirm the schedule and ask what they will need you to do. Sometimes my job has been to check each item off a master list as it is delivered and tell the movers where it goes. Are your items/boxes numbered? This helps to know if anything is missing. Hope this helps a little. A hot bath at the end of the day does too! Best of luck!
