In the What did you learn I posted

I don't recognize when I'm sad.

Any shared experiences in this area are appreciated.

Me too, although sometimes I have to sit quietly to have it come quite clear. I sometimes feel my head is buzzing and only after others have gone to bed and I have quiet time, does it become clear that I am sad.

Yes given time I can.

I was at a funeral of a friend (over 20 years)

Emotions didn't hit me until
A. His wife touched my shoulder as the family walked in &
B. His daughter in law walked in and I touched her shoulder

It was about 10 days from the time I heard of his death until the funeral

I'm sorry for your loss, it can be so hard to lose a friend. We just expect them to always be there and then suddenly, they are not there. It can take time for the reality of it to catch up with us - for me, anyway.

Growing up & well into adulthood I didn't recognize my feelings or even that I could have feelings. So now halfway through life I'm learning which ones feel like what name and how to deal with them and make them part of who I am.

I have a hard time recognizing many of my own emotions also. Sadness has never seemed to be one of them though. Things pertaining to how I feel about myself is what I'm really bad at. I don't recognize anxiety properly.

Alexithymia is a common companion with being autistic. Sometimes people point out emotions for me that I actually do not have, and I don't like the mental heuristics I have to go through whenever anyone asks me "How are you?" because I don't like following NT protocol, so I do the literal search to see if I'm feeling anything. Most of the time, I don't know what it is. Depression is an overall mood, so I think sadness is happening a lot through my thoughts and lack of inertia, but I don't 'feel' sad all the time, it just is the lack of identifiable emotion.

Thanks for kind words about my friends death/ my loss. He really helped me a lot over the years.

The mold and musty smell of the old church hit me when I walked in the door.

That's one reason I avoid older buildings...but I digress.

Sometimes I think fear over rules some of my emotions.

Thanks to all for sharing their experience. Transparencies were slow coming to this writer.
I used to think if I let people in I would just get rejected again.
