I actually wasn’t even in the area when it happened. I was flying back from Florida and they had taken us to St. Louis for like an hour or two before they took us the rest of the way.

Street signs are down, most traffic lights are broke, trees are knocked down, and the power is out to the point that I can’t put gas in my car along with many other things I can’t do. It sounds like it’ll be a few days before the power comes back in my neighborhood and even longer in other areas.

All this is messing with my fundamental understanding of reality. It’s like the 1800s again around here. and btw, I’m as shocked as you are that I was about to post this.

physically, I’m safe. Mentally, I’m barely keeping it together.

The Midwest had a terrible windstorm. Straight winds, so not a hurricane, but winds up to 100 mph. These winds are rare, but just as deadly. Plus, temperate zones aren’t really used to it. Residents aren’t prepared with flashlights, batteries, bottled water, etc.

Hang in there, Cubs, it will get better. Eventually power will be restored. It is like the 1800s for a while.

When Irma came through, we were without power for a week. And it was hot and humid. In the evenings we sat on the porch and talked. It was lovely. Not everything about the 1800s was bad. :D

Our town just got power back today after being out for 24 hours. Lot of split trees and damaged intersection lights too. After the first two hours I had the good insight to purchase a whole lot of ice so we were able to save our refrigerator. Lost everything in our freezer though, solid $50 bought groceries the night before . We were lucky that I own camping gear. Huddled around a battery powered lantern last night.

Things will get back to normal soon enough. Hang in there.

You would think people would plan for tornado though, as rare as they are.

I don’t think this was a tornado. I think it is called a derecho. It is much rarer than tornadoes. Tornadoes usually have limited damage, bad where they hit, but not widespread.

From what I’ve heard, NO ONE expected this to happen. If we did, I would’ve never gotten on that plane.

I know. I was just saying I thought people generally kept emergency supplies like flashlights and batteries in case of a tornado or any other extreme storm event that knocks out the power.

Yeah. How could anyone beyond forecasting. Even then. I didn't know about it until 20 minutes before it hit our town.

Update: I was able to put gas in my car. Furthermore, my mom has power back and is letting me stay with her for the time being. The worst is over for me!
