I recently moved to a new state and people set fireworks off here at new years. I'm talking about full-blown professional type fireworks being set off in neighborhoods by everyday people. It's illegal, but so many do it that the police can't handle it and look the other way. I usually like to sleep on new years but was kept up until 2:00am. I am exhausted and angry at the world. Local forums indicate that this is normal for the entire area, not just my neighborhood, and that the only neighborhoods likely to be quiet are gated HOA communities that I will never be able to afford.

Are fireworks a problems where you live? If so, how do you handle fireworks? What cities or states can be considered firework 'safe'? I don't want to stay here.

For example, the new noisy neighborhood is the Sarasota/Bradenton metro area in Florida, the old quiet neighborhoods where I never had any trouble, even in low income areas were Edmond, Norman and other Oklahoma City, OK suburbs. My grandmother in Cedar Rapids, Iowa says she also has problems with people setting off loud, illegal fireworks.

Thanks

Are you sure it's illegal? I mean, different states of USA sometimes have different laws (right?), so maybe it's legal in this new place?

As for me, I've never had a problem with fireworks. They're nice to watch, but since I can be really clumsy, I haven''t launched any myself and don't plan on doing so, either.

I am fairly sure they are illegal - checked the laws and the only days any fireworks are allowed at all are 4th of July, New Year's Eve and New Years day but they are set off sporadically all around these dates and on Christmas. Plus in the cities only 'Commercial' fireworks are allowed meaning only sparklers and such. People here get around the laws by buying large fireworks in the country, signing a waiver saying they are for agricultural use and then setting them off in-mass wherever they please.

I have no problems with sparklers and enjoy firework shows on occasion but they are setting off professional grade fireworks that sound like bombs right in their yards all night long. It sounded like a war zone. Before I left Oklahoma it never even occurred to me that anyone would ever do such a thing.

All I want is to be able to sleep, whether or not what they are doing is technically illegal. But since the laws don't matter they can't be used to find safe zones. I am hoping people here on wrong planet will say their city or state (or even region or country - whatever they are comfortable with) and whether or not people in their area set off loud, bomb-like fireworks as part of their new year's celebrations. Hopefully, we can make a map for anyone trying to avoid experiencing mandatory midnight fireworks.

I don't dislike fireworks. Dogs go nuts at fireworks, but honestly, I just dislike dogs that go nuts. I don't mind fireworks.

We had two sets of fireworks on New Year's Eve - one lot at 8pm and one lot at midnight. The first lot were supposedly for kids who had to go to bed before midnight.

The noise made me jump and my cats weren't thrilled either, they hid under my bed.

These fireworks were allowed though, they were put on by the city's council. I feel for you having to deal with fireworks that are random, close by and not allowed. I'd be on edge if it were me.
