I just got into college, and am having the biggest problem obtaining a student loan. I dont know anyone who is a credit-worthy co-signer, and I cant get approved largely because I am without a cosigner. Any suggestions? I've already recieved the maximum amount of Federal loans.

Also, remember the First Year Study Abroad experience(FYSAE) i told you about?, well as you know i was invited to apply for the program- at my school- because of high merit in high school- this happened during the application process, I was interviewed and accepted into the program, and I was told that i was "in". this process was done in early april.

Then (about 2 weeks ago)- at the last minute before school started, I recieved a phone call saying that I need to pay a $300 deposit for the FYSAE program, which no one notified me of until the very last minute. now if I pay the deposit, I have to be placed on a waiting list- not guaranteeing my spot in the program. Someone has to drop out of the program, and the waiting list just keeps increasing as I am waiting to recieve loans to help me with that- I also have to buy my books, and pay the rest of my tuition.

I dont get much in life, but i always wanted to travel abroad, so the least i can do is get that done. It was MY honor, aside from all the other kids in my class who recieve awards and scholarships. That is the only recognition I receive for my hard work in high school, and deserve every little piece of it. Its not like I even get recognised for my hard work.

That being said, thats why I am a bit grouchy, ( Hey i suffered all this evil that happened to me at the conclusion of the year, therefore where is the payoff?) or else I feel as though i am just the "bad" person- who never has anything good happening to her. Your right, maybe i shouldnt take it out on others.

I remember being in your position about 10 years ago. I was too young to have enough of a credit history to get loans to pay my tuition. My father couldn't cosign, and it would take to much effort and cost too much money to declare legal independence (basically "divorce" my parents). There are Federal Plus parent loans available and I don't think the parent has to have great credit to obtain one....my father was in the process of declaring bankruptcy at the time though.

I ended up going to a community college for the first two years and worked and saved up money to send myself to a state university. I still had loans but it didn't cover everything......I had to pay about 60% without loans. I remember that time being very stressful. I was constantly in danger of getting kicked out of school for non-payment of my tuition. I did graduate and eventually had my boyfriend at the time cosign for a Citibank student loan for the last semester. The only good that came out of that situation was that I didn't come out of school with that much debt (around $15,000 total).

I wish I had gone to a better school, or had the opportunity to study abroad (I've still never left the country). But I have a degree, and I have a career, and I'm doing fine.

If you say you did really well in high school, did you look into any scholarships? There are some that aren't through actually through the school, but private scholarships.
