Apparently the rainbow is not just a symbol for LGBT.

I have seen the rainbow used as a symbol for autism too. I saw a bumper sticker on someone's car that said "children with autism" and had a rainbow on it and each letter in "autism" written with different colors of the rainbow.

The rainbow is also a religious symbol.

Thirty years ago Jesse Jackson strived to create "a rainbow coalition" between folks of different color.

So rainbows crop up all of the time to symbolize all kinds of things.

Rainbows have for a long time been associated with joy or optimism. They tend to appear when it's raining and sunny at the same time, so it's kind like how some things can make you happy and sad at the same time. I saw something that in a For Better or For Worse comic when I was younger.

Oh yeah, and Kermit the Frog sang a song about them.

She comes in colors everywhere. She combs her hair. She's like a rainbow.

The rainbow as a symbol has had many meanings - that's why the original LGBTQ pride flag originally had a PINK stripe.

And then there's the myth of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Pretty popular icon on St. Patrick's Day. Also a name for a popular brand of chocolates that I've often had at Christmas.

The original pride flag has a pink stripe to distinguish it from an ordinary rainbow. I don't think it was ever meant to commandeer an actual rainbow.
