When I was in high school I, and a couple of friends toured the FBI building in Washington. The guide was an actual FBI agent. He told us that "just this year 23 people have bought the Brooklyn Bridge. And if you don't believe me its right here on files on con artists".
So as late as 1972 folks were still falling for that!
