And by the way, what's a piler? Does he mean "pliers" or "pillar"?

At least some subset of IPA characters is supported in these forums:

Phonetic transcription of international in two English dialects = [ɪntə'næʃənəɫ] or [ɪɾ̃ɚ'næʃɨnəɫ]

but to insert them here is tricky.

i read this book 35 years ago, it was called "a dictionary of southern-speak in jimmy carter's america" [been a while, i think that was the title] that had examples of northern-speak and southern-speak, one of which was the following-

SMEAR: a stain spread by friction, to spread something over surface: to spread something liquid or greasy over a surface, or be spread over a surface [northern definition].
SMEAR: one's organ of hearing- speech example: "watt's that unduh mah hay-uh? whah, that's SMEAR!"
