Yeah, I'm blind too. The lenses on my glasses are -8 on the right eye and -8.5 on my left eye.

I know this is off-topic, but anyone considered lasik? My allergies are getting so bad that I can't use contact lenses, so it seems more and more appealing the more I think about it. But it also seems stupid to have elective eye surgery.

I agree, this would not be considered rude.

However, I always feel compelled to try and be helpful, so I try to give directions. Bear in mind that my spatial memory is so poor that I'm completely unable to give accurate directions even in my hometown. So really, I'd be doing them a favor if I just walked away! Instead, I give the illusion that I know what I am talking about, and probably end up mixing them up badly.

Wow, that is bad!

I don't wear contacts because my eyes are so dry (because of allergies), so I always wear glasses. I have a friend with rotten eyesight who's considering the operation, though. What made her decide to look into it was being in a bus crash when her glasses were broken. She felt completely useless because she couldn't see anything at all (I think her eyesight is comparable to yours), and she didn't want to get into that kind of situation again. I think she has deifnitely decided to do it, but she has to wait a few years. They don't recommend doing it until you're out of your early twenties, because your eyes tend to still be changing a lot at that point.

I'm 30. When lasik first came out, I read a lot of articles on it and got scared. The worse your eyes were, the higher the chance of complication. Also, people complained about getting halo's were the incisions were, so I was put off. It didn't help that it cost like $2,000/eye. However, one of my Czech friends worked at an eye clinic and she was trying to convince me that I should save for it because my eyes were so bad and I'd be a good candidate as a mid-20's age person.

Now I've started thinking about it again because they do it without the incision. Also, the $500/eye doesn't seem too bad when I consider how much I have to spend on the specialized lenses to be able to even get my prescription.

i think i read somewhere that the older you get the lasik wears off and your eyes mess up real bad, like you go more blind than you were before

I wear plastic lenses because they're lighter. They scratch easier though.

They also have this thing where they can slim your lenses down- I think they're called "Featherweights" or something.

I assume that's speculation, because Lasik hasn't been out long enough to really know for sure.

I mean of course you could still get farsighted with age, but I doubt that the Lasik would "wear off."

Maybe I aught to read about it in the medical journals again. Last time I read about it, I decided to wait 5 years to see if the technology improved (and it seems like it did). I heard that your eyes can go back to needing glasses, but not that it would get worse than before.

I'm starting to feel all helpless like that lady in who was in the bus crash. Like I can't even get out of bed at night to go to the bathroom without crashing into something. Even if I don't crash into anything, I feel like I'm getting carsick from walking around like that.

There aren't any lights on in my house when I'm going to the bathroom at night. I could go blind and still make it to the bathroom okay! LOL :P

I've had my current glasses less than a year, and they already have a scratch. It's really been driving me nuts for the last week and making me think about lasik even more.

Also, I can get lasik at a discount with my current insurance. If I get the violin selling job, I'll loose that coverage. But I guess I'd be making more doing that anyway, so the $1,000 to get it done would be easier to save.

It definitely has improved a lot. The risk has gone down a lot, although they still don't know what will happen in fifty years in terms of how your eyes will age.

Yeah, your eyes can get worse again again. But it's because they would have gotten worse anyway. Lasik only corrects your current vision problem. It doesn't prevent your eyes from continuing to get worse. That's why they don't recommend the surgery until your eyes are past the age where they're usually changing rapidly.
