If it doesn't matter as to quality, you should be
able to find a used P2 (or even P3) for pretty
cheap.

Not that I can always do it (tough mental trick), but a key to getting what you want is wanting things you can get. Remember, you won't always be so young. It kept me going, anyway.

I'm mostly on the "Family PC", and I'm hoping to get one of my own soon.

I have one for you. It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard or mouse or tower but you can have it. Oh, I forgot to mention there's some assembly required.

I have my own Laptop. I would,t have it any other way. It doesn't have to be fixed all the time, like a tower does.

Well, I have got some PCs (I couldn't count 'em on my hands). Most of them are oldies though (except my main notebook). Man, I couldn't live without having my own dedicated computer. Just the idea to share a device that I use day-by-day for long hours makes me sick.

To Redmage: Why don't you get a P3 or Athlon? It costs almost nothing (yes, if you're lucky, you can get it's parts for free), and it's fairly enough to do the most of your everyday computer activities (well if I don't count the resource hog games. Not very far ago, my main notebook gone bad, so I had to use a PII notebook with 192mb ram & 40gb hdd for 2 weeks, and I can tell you, it was fairly enough for browsing the web, downloading torrents, watching films, coding in C#, PHP, HTML, and even for doing basic Photoshop tasks.) If I were you, I'd consider this.
