When it first came on air, it seemed interesting. I even watched a few episodes. After that, it quickly got boring...very fast.

Every episode is almost the same. Dark skies, big waves, heavy swearing, some complaining by the crew, and helpless craps caught and thrown into storage. Exciting. Not only that, but almost every time I change the channel to the "Discovery Channel", I see this show. 80% of the time, ill see it on. Is it seriously that popular?! How?! I remember shows much more interesting than a show about crap..err...crab fishing and because of "Deadliest Catch", I rarely see those shows. It almost seems as though its on all day. You know what? Hold on...let me change the channel to 61 and see if its still on....

....

Yep. 3rd time today ive seen this show on. Seriously...enough is enough... Yep, as expected. Some guy with a beard is yelling at a guy named Jake about how a guy named Freddy does more work and Jake should shut up and not tell beardy what he already knows. ...5 minutes later, they are still yelling at each other. This is so interesting.

I heard about a "Deadliest Catch" marathon one day. One thing came to mind. If the show is normally on long enough throughout the day, how freaking long is this "marathon" going to be? Sure enough, it was on for almost the entire day.

Needless to say, I dont watch the Discovery Channel much anymore. All thanks to one of the highest rated TV shows. I dont understand at all why this show is on so freaking often. I really need to complain about this or ill explode. Yes yes, I know. "Just dont watch Discovery Channel, Mist". I have such a passionate hate against this show because its so freaking boring and its on almost constantly, taking up air time for shows about the universe, or future technology. I can remember the days of 2057 and Future Car. Those were great. Now we have arctic crab fishing. Woooooo.....

Someone please tell me why this show is so amazing.

Erm, ordinarily the show airs two to three times per week. Can't say why you might have hit it so often; perhaps it would help to read your TV listings occasionally, rather than just blindly jumping from channel to channel. Yes, there has been a marathon this past week; there would appear to be two main crab-fishing seasons in the Bering Sea (king and opilio, or snow crab), and the series has been covering the fleet for both since at least 2005, so there's a lot of show to - er - show.

I find it quite interesting, personally - this is what I meant when I argued about the concept of the "reality show". Most shows with that label are anything but "real" - they feature the highly stylized behavior of people who are aware every moment that they are on camera, and have signed on for the show because they want to be famous. The situations on Deadliest Catch, however, are completely unscripted, and the reactions to them are not the reactions of men who seek fame, but rather of men who fish for crab because they can't imagine a more fulfilling way of making a buck, and are willing to tolerate the cameras (presumably so they can make more money for ship maintenance - at least, I hope somebody's helping Phil out with the Cornelia Marie's frequent overhauls...).

Well ill give the show that much credit. It is real, unlike MTV's reality shows. Its just so boring because it seems like its the same thing over and over again. Either that or im just not paying attention to what they are talking about.

If it airs two or three times per week, then why is it STILL on? I just checked not 10 seconds ago and its still on. Its been on all day. There was a commerical about a 4th of July marathon though, so that might have something to do with it.

And by the way, we cant afford anything other than basic cable, so there are no listings to check.

yah i know what you mean. basic cable sucks and i have it, my favorite shows are the first 48 hours, intervention, operation repo, ghost adventures, and ghost hunters. my mom has like 500 channels and i'd much rather have her cable, gem shopping is my favorite channel on her set.

oh well im not trying to complain because i dont even pay for cable i get it for free because its included in my rent

Yep, that's the marathon - every episode of every season. They should be up to the '08 king season, or maybe the most recent, the '09 opilio - the easy way to tell is when they show the Time Bandit; Johnathan's the captain during king season, his brother Andy during opilio. Also, since king crab fishing happens during what passes for summer in the Bering Sea, ships are very rarely frozen during king season, while during opilio season, they're constantly watching the ice pack or forcing their way through it to either fish or get back to the harbor.

Thats neat. I dont think any apartments around my area have that kind of deal. I dont watch TV that much anyway, I just keep it on in the background most of the time. Without it, it just feels tense for some reason.

Oh I see. I have heard them mention King and Opilio before, I just never payed much attention to what it was about. I might watch an episode or two and see if I gain some interest in it. Wouldnt hurt.

Why is it on so often? Because it's still better than crap like Orange County Choppers.

Other than it's awesome in small doses.

I personally like to watch Travel Channel and get a little more cultered every day.

Kinda reminds me of Lemonade Tycoon iPhone app. Same concept. Make money, tweak your recipe, buy improvements, make money, and so on.

Ive been watching Travel Channel a good bit lately. It has some pretty interesting stuff besides world culture and food.

Having skimmed over the posts, I will give you the simple answer, as followed by many networks.

Executive meddling and/or Network Decay.

Oh yeah... I love some of the stuff they have on the Travel Channel. "Bizarre Foods", "Man vs. Food", and that new show "Bite Me" are three of my favorites.

Anyway, "Deadliest Catch" is like a potato chip to me. I can't watch just one. I go into the show expecting to be bored to tears and I usually wind up getting completely engrossed in the storyline. I've never actually seen anyone die on the show but I have seen people get really, really close, and when that happens it makes for some great T.V. (as morbid as that sounds).

I think part of the appeal of the show is that it stars a bunch of regular dudes just trying to get paid. They aren't actors. They're just your run-of-the-mill blue collar guys who happen to almost die on a daily basis. They get into fights, smoke cigs, cuss and fish. It's just all in a day's work for them.

I have like 20 episodes on my DVR that I need to watch, but "Reno 911" takes precident. So many shows... so little time.

I gotta admit that I enjoy it a lot, to the point of perseverating on it when I get the chance.

It's definitely the 'almost dying every day' factor that draws me. I like the older episodes a lot more, they're not trying as hard to actively create a continuous story line. They're more like mini-documentaries. But the newer episodes (after the show got really popular) are okay, too.

I think it's primarily during the day that they show them for hours on end.

I hate all the baby shows that TLC and Discovery Health love airing, especially during the day. Yuck. And the weight loss shows are pretty bad, too.

Deadliest Catch and Ice Road Truckers are real reality t.v. shows than those shows that totally scripted and cut. Uncut and unscripted is reality t.v.
