I don't know if that was better or worse

They were for criminals weren't they? Did you nick a copper's helmet? I always wanted to do that, like Dennis The Menace.

I don't know what I did

They took me to court and I ended up there

I think I was naughty

I sort of liked it there
I got clean clothes, a bed and quite a lot of attention which was something I never had before so when the other kids got to go home on the holidays I did my best to do something so they wouldn't let me get out

I remember making a great big apple crumble one time when everyone else was aloud to go out

There's only one real Dennis the Menace.

The US Dennis wasn't menacing at all.

Agreed, Mr. Wilson is easily menaced.

I didn't even realize that there was an American version of Dennis the Menace.

It's funny because they're not even like two versions of the same character, just two different characters that coincidentally have the same name.

Yeah. The American Dennis the Menace looks innocent. The British Dennis the Menace is anything but, lol.

I see. That would likely have sobered us up a bit.

American Dennis was very sanitized wasn't he, relatively speaking? As if " " wasn't as socially acceptable in the US. Apparently they both first showed up on March 12 1951, as cartoon characters. There's probably a fascinating study of the national characters of the UK v. the US that explains it. If so I should read it if it's in the public domain free of charge. Or maybe it's more about what the media elite wanted to present to their respective audiences in order to influence public behaviour? Maybe the US comics didn't want to set an anarchic example while the UK comics went for more subtle control by sublimating the rebellious struggles of British children, if that makes any sense. I'd also like to know more about how the two characters first surfaced on exactly the same day. Were they totally independent creations or did the comic book writers or their bosses collude somehow?
