I think I was naughty

Was there no due process where they told you what you'd done? Or were you too out of it to take it in?

I got clean clothes, a bed and quite a lot of attention which was something I never had before so when the other kids got to go home on the holidays I did my best to do something so they wouldn't let me get out

I remember making a great big apple crumble one time when everyone else was aloud to go out

That was clever. Like a vagrant hitting a copper to get a meal and a nice warm cell for the night. Knowing my luck he'd just hit me back if I tried it.

Well I did assault a copper but I don't remember but that's not why I was in there

I think it was a lot of things at once plus I threatened my social worker in the court so that didn't help me but at least I got a new social worker

That's what I was "a vagrant" it's hard to accept that actually because I was a child but that's one of the reasons they took me off the street
Also I can remember them saying that I was a danger to myself and others

I got 3 years supervision order for the assault as well because I was too young to get probation

It was such a complicated time of my life but thanks for helping me untangle it a bit mate

Did some research and didn't need to look very far. In the following Wikipedia article:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_the_Menace_(U.S._comics)
we find:

Quote:
Coincidentally, a UK comic strip of the same name debuted on the same day.[5] The two are not related and change their names subtly in each other's respective countries of origin to avoid confusion.

As for why the American Dennis was a "menace", it might help to know who Benjamin Spock was. He wrote a book on child rearing that every American mother read after WWII when the young men had returned from service and began fathering children. He advocated against "traditional" forms of discipline, advising parents to reason with their children, to correct their own behavior in the understanding that doing so would be in everyone's best interest. Dennis was a quite normal little boy but to his parents he was a menace because they couldn't simply give him a proper thumping when he needed one.

The UK Dennis the Menace regularly received corporal punishment from his father and other adults in the form of beatings, usually with a slipper.

The current iteration of Dennis the Menace is a much milder character. He still gets in trouble but he's not depicted as a relentless bully of 'softies' (these were kids who enjoyed gentler pasttimes).

He just did what he needed to do to survive, like the rest of us.

It was a coincidence? Bang goes my conspiracy theory. Though it's a funny kind of coincidence, two countries bring out a character of the same name on the same day. And we're expected to believe it just happened that way? This is bringing out the Dale Gribble in me.

I always like the thought of a society that's none judgemental where you can just talk openly and freely and just be kind of peaceful

I'd like to live in a world like that one day me

The last one who said that got nailed to a tree for his trouble. But it's right of course. Aggressive gits spoil everything. Let's kill them.

It's nice though innit to just feel safe enough to say what's on your mind without fear of reprisal from one side or the other

Sides? I always thought it was more like a circular firing squad with shots coming from all possible angles.

I think honest and open debate is crucial for progress to be made in society, but it needs to be done in a respectful way and in good faith. That’s often not the case, sadly. If someone says something that’s not true, it should be open to scrutiny. Otherwise, we could fall prey to misinformation and disinformation that’s harmful in at least some capacity.
