I feel the need to clarify my vote.

I chose: Like them, but wouldn't keep one as a pet

I like them and am not opposed to keeping one as a pet. However, I have not ever owned one myself at this time although I have helped take care of a friend's on a daily basis. So therefore I did not think I could truthfully choose the answer that says I have owned one and there is no option for "I like them but have not had the opportunity to own one as a pet."

I don't have any, but rattlesnakes frequently appear in my dreams.

No reptiles for me. I don't even like frogs. The noise they make during the hot summer nights. I have seen plenty of them on our sidewalks during the summer. I freak out when I see one.

I thought frogs were amphibians.

If they're good dreams, they must be controlling your dream-rodent population. If they're bad dreams, then it's time to start dreaming about kingsnakes!




And yes, frogs are amphibians. Reptiles and amphibians are two kinds of herpetiles. Herpetology is the study of reptiles and amphibians.

And there is a lot of overlap between reptile enthusiasts and amphibian enthusiasts. A "herper" is someone who is seriously devoted to the hobby of keeping reptiles and / or amphibians (often referred to together as "herps"). "Field herping" means looking for reptiles and amphibians in the wild. I could go on.

I have three corn snakes, one 4ft 7 male called Ginger

And another hatchling called normal

I keep and breed some ball pythons.They are very addictive,especially once you get involved in all the genetic mutations.






I don't even know if i could survive without hatching some from time to time.(It seems like the only thing i can do right.)

I found a legless lizard today!
They're Really hard to find!
It's my third one in Thirty years in Australia!
It was really pale, sort of a milky translucent, and shiny,
with a darker head, which gave me pause for a second, because that's
similar to the 'scary' ones, but as it escaped back into it's burrow,
I caught a glimpse of the little vestigial legs!

I wanted to take a photo, but I was too busy at work.

Also, I busted Boris the Water Dragon having a swim in the pool the other day!

I also just found out Sir David Attenborough made a show called 'Serpent'
which I Must track down!

Why would anyone keep such an amazing creature in captivity?

I agree with you on the Anacondas (like keeping a pet tiger imo),but take a look at the designer color and pattern mutations that some private and professional breeders are producing with ball pythons (Which are more like a housecat than a tiger) http://www.newenglandreptile.com/nerd/index.php/ball-pythons/nerd-s-ball-python-collection.html

So, what justifies keeping snakes is the potential to breed them such that they have purdy patterns and colors?

Really?

The genetic color variations are rarely found in the wild due to their inability to properly camoflage.So whats the harm..My animals are well looked after and are very healthy thank you very much.

Why have a dog? A cat? A hamster? A rat?
Why keep fish in an aquarium?
Why have zoos? Aviaries? Ant farms?

Because we are fascinated by them!
Because we love them!
Because they entertain us!
Because they take us back to nature, in this urban world!
But mostly, because they imbue us with a sense of wonder!

Wow - syzygish, I have just read your post about the legless lizard. I have read that they are rare. It is great that you've seen one today!

I've looked into licencing requirements for keeping reptiles in Australia again recently. It seems that perhaps they've relaxed them a little. You can get a licence immediately to keep carpet snakes and related breeds (ie carpet pythons, childrens pythons, green tree pythons, some varieties of lizard). I'm pretty sure years ago this was not the case - all snakes were on the secondary licence which you got only after having the primary licence for some years.
