Very frequently the billing department for a merchandise return/cable television/hotel makes a billing mistake in my favor.

Is it wrong not to correct them when you know they are incorrect?

Sometimse I am on the phone with them and have not said anything.

It happens so often, I am starting to feel guilty about it. Making mistakes could cost them their job.

Yes. You should at least query them. If they give you a wrong figure, and you ask "are you sure?" and they stick with it, no problem.

To be completely honest, you really should. I understand where you're coming from, for some reason I tend to not have the courage or anything to actually mention an error, even if it's in my favour, but you really should. Otherwise once they realise their mistake, you're gonna be stuck with a massive bill one month and are gonna be like "WTF IS THIS?!" etc.

Yes you should inform them. Not noticing is one thing but noticing it and not telling them is wrong.

I always correct errors where I have been under billed or given too much change in a restaurant or grocery store, coz often the shortfall comes out of the employees pocket.

Companies are a different matter.

For one thing, the time cost (to me) taken in explaining AND sorting it out is usually MORE than the arithmetic error.

I wouldn't feel any compulsion to do free accounts reconciliation work if I found there was a billing error from a company.

Personally where I work it's critical for the office employees to not make billing errors, and mistakes like that can cost them their job.

If they notice it they'll likely call you.

Why say no to free money? For all they know, you didn't even notice. It's their responsibility to bill you properly, anyway, not yours.
