Well, I just thought I'd ask... since it's open season on nationalities, why not introduce my own? The Irish are supposed to be drunken, disorderly, wife beating, or abjectly beaten, according to gender... that's the stereotype anyway. We already have a thread asking about nice South Africans, why not nice thick paddies? If we can be racist against one group, why not my own?

Oh... I should mention I'm a thick Paddy.

I've met some nice paddies, some horrid paddies and some plastic paddies.

That answer your question?

Hi Freak Contagion,
you won't have heard of thick paddies in the US... it's what I was called all the way through school, in England, because the Irish were the bete noir of the day... a bit like Polish or other emigres in the UK now. Apparently everything that was wrong with the job market was our fault for doing the work nobody else wanted to, and of course the IRA was at it's height, so all Irish people were seen as potential terrorists. Not by everyone, just by some.

The reason I asked the question isn't that I'm interested in the answer, it's because I'm offended by another thread which asks "anyone ever met a nice South African," which I find shockingly racist. Maybe it's been removed though... I can only hope.

You know what's the worst part about being Irish and Cherokee?

When you get on the firewater you're usually too lazy to beat up your wife!

I almost got into a physical fight, with an Irishman, at the door of my building, last March, when I should have been going back to my Mod roots. The punk rocker thing wasn't working for me, anymore, and that guy really was a prick, who hated people with disabilities.

He's no longer in my building. He was holding the fort down for his ex wife, but she ended up moving into a care home, so he had to move.

I think there might be more Irish living in America-Canada than there are in Ireland. I do not know where I have heard that before. There probably a good number in Austrailia and new Zealand as well.

Thick as in stupid or as in chubby? I've met lots of nice Irish people before and I married into an Irish Catholic family - they are lovely people with none of the negative stereotypes.
