The name Grunwald isn't going to tell you much until you are a history buff but today there is an anniversary of a VERY important historic event EVERY Pole knows of :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Grunwald

Not knowing this date is for us like for an American not knowing the date of the discovery of America or, for an Englishman, not knowing anything about when the Battle of Hastings took place 8) (However, on the other hand, in my college someone once wrote during a test in American History class, that America was discovered in 1963 so anything is possible).

There is an inscenisation of the battle. As for the king Władysław Jagiełło himself (the ruler at that time), if it was happening now, he wouldn't have taken part in the battle because he would be in prison for statutory rape - his wife Jadwiga (who later became a saint of the Catholic Church) was 12 or 13 when he married her. :D But at the time of the battle she wasn't among the living any more, as she died as a result of the childbirth complications (the baby died too).

I think that it should be celebrated, or observed.

It's St. Swithin's Day, and all.
