I have had moments in my life where I knock on someone's front door when I be selling candy bars and I hear "come in" and I would refuse to come in because I didn't know these people. I didn't feel comfortable walking in someone's home when I didn't know these people even though they lived in my neighborhood. Even as an adult I would still feel uncomfortable because they may be expecting someone and might be assuming I am that person so just imagine what it be like for them if it was someone else instead that walked right in their home?

What do you do in these situations? Do you just walk in or stay and wait till they answer? Or does it depend on how well you know these people? Or if they were expecting you, would you walk right in? I would walk right in if they were expecting me.

I stay outside until someone opens the door. I like to be polite.

This doesn't really happen to me much, but I'd just let myself in in such a situation. It's not impolite if you've been invited in.

I would just go in, since they told me I could. And if I didn't, they might think it was a prank or something :?:
And if they said come in, sounds more like they meant me to come in on my own. Wouldn't they have said nothing and answered the door if they wanted me to wait?

Unless I know the person, and I know that they're in a wheelchair or something, and/or ARE expecting me at that particular time, I pretend I didn't hear the "come in", and I wait outside til they come to the door. How do I know they don't think I'm somebody else they're expecting, and I might give them a rude shock just barging in?

I don't see how it's not polite if they told you to come in...

But anyway, I'll usually just go in if they tell me I can. If I'm knocking on someone's door, it's obviously someone I know anyway, so it's not like it's a stranger (though, strictly speaking, that fact increases the amount of possible danger since you're more likely to be attacked/murdered/whatever by someone you know and trust, but that's a topic for another thread really).
