If the worst thing he does is jack up the cost of an iphone we'll be getting off lightly.

I think it could be more than iPhones. Anybody with a pot of spare money and a wish list of electronics might be wise to go shopping sooner rather than later. Beyond that, I guess there's not much point thinking about it.

Probably not much, so long as they're not made in the US. If anything it might be a positive as companies focus on more stable markets than the US.

Even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from a great enough height.

There's a new maintenance tech at work and now I have to get used to interacting with a new guy, which always gives me anxiety. When I first started working there the two maintenance workers who used to work there would laugh at me all the time, so I still get nervous around new maintenance guys.

My roommate has a habit of buying a lot of food and then keeping it until it rots. I guess he's hoping he'll use it but he never does. And as time has gone on he's only started buying more food each time. Meanwhile I'm the one who has to smell it because I'm the only one who uses the kitchen. It drives me crazy

Yeah but if the Chinese manufacturers are losing money because of reduced sales in the US they'll attempt to recover that from other territories. It'll drive up prices everywhere.

I'm pretty sure brands typically rely on cutting prices for consumers when they want to stimulate sales. If their market is shrinking, usually that means increasing sales is needed, rather than increasing margin. Further, reduced growth will mean increasing their margins might just drive demand down further, because consumers simply can't afford to spend more, so they'll be forced to spend the same even if it means getting less than they used to.

I'd expect manufacturers in places receiving lower tariffs than China to attempt to increase margin within the US market. They'll take advantage of Chinese competition being forced to raise prices by doing the same.

I'd also expect prices to go up everywhere for products that have supply chains that involve the US, but I'd also expect to see companies removing the US entirely from their supplies and manufacturers.

^I think that's illusory. If prices fall it won't be because the manufacturers are reducing their margins, it'll be at the cost of quality. For prestige electronics firms like Apple which rely on exclusivity as a big part of their appeal, they won't want to do that.

I hope you're right FXE, I really do, but I'll actually eat an iPhone if anything gets cheaper in the next four years as a result of these tariffs. I might have to if I can't afford food any more.

With some goods it might not be so much getting cheaper, but more the rate of increase of those goods diminishing relative to other items.

I would also expect savings to be found through decreased quality since no one likes cutting into their margins unless it gives them some sort of advantage, but when money's tight being competitive on price is an advantage so it's not as though there's no incentive to cut into margins. Businesses will cut into their margins if there's more incentive to do so than to not do so because failing to respond to that pressure costs more than it makes.

You're right that brands that rely on prestige are sometimes much less rational in this regard though, because they worry about how becoming too accessible might impact their prestige. Thankfully most brands aren't prestige brands.

An example of something I expect to possibly actually become cheaper might be softwood lumber within Canada. Since our softwood lumber will now be more expensive in the US, it might be more profitable to keep more for the domestic market, which will drive down prices. This might help industries that rely on lumber as well, like construction.
