My daughter asked, "what's that?" She was pointing to a crawling shadow behind the shade. I looked and it was a rather large yellow jacket. I told Livy that I was going to set it free with some toilet tissue and that it's not anything I want to see her do - bees sting.

I captured it and showed her the business end of it and let it loose outside where it flew off.

I like saving creatures instead of killing them.

Is a yellow jacket not a wasp?
I also prefer to release bees and wasps rather than killing them.

Well done you. I don't see the need to kill any creature unless you have to. That was a good lesson to teach your child.

That's so great!! ! You showed such a good example to your daughter.
I like saving little creatures too. I've saved a lot of spiders from my roommate's slipper.

That's really cool, props to you. Bees scare me so much after I got attacked by some when I was kid (I think I inavded their space on my bike), that I would be too scared to do that. I think that you showed your daughter a really good lesson, though :)

I also like to save bees and set them free. I even saved a silverfish a week ago.

i completely agree with not hurting insects if possible. my favourite quote from one of my grade 8 students was:

"before you were my teacher, i used to pull the wings off flies. now, i let them go free."

i think i would have made even more headway eventually if i wasn't trying to teach about compassion and animal rights at a hutterite colony farm school. the elders were not impressed, so my contract was not renewed!

Cool that you saved the bee. One thing to consider, if you see a bee walking slowly on the ground, is that they may have miscalculated their displacement from the flowers they were headed towards (or they could have been cut down) and they only take about enough fuel to get there. If you want to help them stay alive, a nice thing to do for them is get some honey or mix some sugar and water and place a small amount before them. Otherwise, the bee will expire if they can't find another source of nectar.

I tend to be the girl who saves everything in her path. I get very upset when people beat me to a bug and kill it.
