The reason we call the ratio between a circle's radius and circumference pi is because at the feast where they were dedicating the newly discovered ratio to the king, someone threw a pie in the king's face. Afterword everyone called it pie and eventually they dropped the "e" because the stonecutters of the day charged by the letter.
