A tall tree in the state of Washington. I took this a while back. Seven photos are merged.

Sorry for the blurriness. I wasn't as good at photography back then.

This is actually five photos merged together vertically. It's in the great redwood forests of Northern California. I went there in the fall of 2009.

That's where I live. On the Lost Coast of NorCal.

The forest floor is different too, lots of ferns, moss and grass instead of dirt and pine needles.

i read a great book (Tall Trees) about the people who climb/fell/sleep atop giant trees like sequoias. it was an incredibly moving account of the people who make it their life to interact with the giants. there was a story of death, marriage in the canopy, being a lumberjack, protests etc. but the best part the the description of being up there and the science of the canopies. there are little bushes and trees and creatures living way up there at the top of the big trees! even unknown species!

In Washington we have the Hoh rain forest. The coastal douglas firs aren't quite as big as coastal redwoods in California, but there's a lot more moss. Also, new trees tend to grow right on top of old dead stumps, and when the dead material rots away you're left with jumples of tangled and exposed roots. This gives the forest a really enchanted feeling.
