On my old Giftorcurse account here, I had a nasty habit of bashing the very institution of adoption in multiple threads in the Politics, Philosophy, and Religion board. If you assume I'm going to be doing that in this thread, you are mistaken. I have no intention of stinking up the forums with such vitriol. In retrospect, what I said about adoption was downright idiotic, if not outright offensive. True, there are those that game the system for their own ends, but that pretty much applies to anything.
I guess that the reason why I moaned and groaned about that subject so much was because, in my youth and cynicism, I couldn't fathom the idea that a human being would be willing to take in someone else's child to raise and unconditionally love as their own. I thought, how is that possible? Any person that does that is either stupid or up to something! Alas, reality proved me wrong. From what I've read on the Internet, the majority of adoptive parents are at least decent people who want what's best for their kids. Heck, one of the characters in my fictional universe is an adoptee, and he and his folks are closer than blood.
