A place for all those who feel saddened by the events in Paris to add their comment.

Spent many happy weeks staying with a friend in the Maisons Laffitte area. My thoughts go out to all French people at this hour. To paraphrase Voltaire "I might disagree with what you say, but I will fight with everything at my command for your right to say it".

one I dare not post, that made me laugh, shows a representation of mohammed french kissing some white guy. it was drawn in such a way as to engender as much outrage as possible among mohammedans, I can tell. which brings to mind a question, why were these cartoonists continually ridiculing the mohammedans?

^ Apparently the whole thing was satirical in nature. I don't think they actually meant any harm by it. But still, people get offended rather easily.

That doesn't excuse what happened though.

They are not mohammedans, they are Moslems. Extreme ones at that. Not dissimilar to many extreme Christians in the US Bible Belt, who would happily wipe out all gays, lesbians, trans people, etc. When they quote Jesus as saying "love your neighbour" they interpret this as "keep all undesirables out of the neighbourhood".

Mohammedan (also spelled Muhammadan, Mahommedan, Mahomedan or Mahometan) is a term for a follower of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. It is used as both a noun and an adjective, meaning belonging or relating to, either Muhammad or the religion, doctrines, institutions and practices that he established. The word was formerly common in usage, but the terms Muslim and Islamic are more common today.

IOW, what is the difference between a moslem and any other follower of Islam?

Someone has discovered Wiktionary or another variant. Clever.

When I lived in Bahrain they were known as moslems or muslims and that was fifty years ago. Spelling is arbitrary.

Charlie Hebdo is a left wing satirical publication with a strong anti-religious component. They have not only made less then mediocre cartoons about Islamic subjects, but also about other religions like Christianity. Also talking about the cartoon you mentioned, from what I have seen Mohammedans have already made a counter cartoon where the Muslim and generic white guy are replaced.

tit for tat, as though two wrongs somehow make a right. I predict that people will refuse to get along until there is a conflagration.

My writing class kind of doubles as a current events class. We learned about Je Suis Charlie today. It is a sad and horrifying thing that people will do something like this, just because someone wrote a comic about their religion. :(

There's a statue/relief image of Mohammed in the Supreme Court building too, isn't there?

and holding a sword to boot.
