how often to replace my faucet filter?
i've been told every year

and also bear in mind our summers are very hot and therefore might be a reason to change more often because of germs

Follow the manufacturer's recommendation for your country.
I don't think it's a case of germs, more that water filters lose their effectiveness over time - and that time is also determined by the quantity of water passed through them.

It depends a lot on where you live and the tap water. Maybe one good indication is how your water tastes. Presuming it tastes better when the filter is new?

I drink a combination of tap, or bottle water. So far it has been mostly bottle.

I use a water jug to filter the tap water at home. It makes a huge difference in taste.

At work I drink water from a water fountain (water cooler).

I refill a 5 gallon bottle with reverse osmosis water at Walmart for $1-sh every week. I live in the country (no city water) and prefer the taste. I also make my own soda using the water (I have a home carbonator).
