1. Homo Evolutis

Evolution is the natural state of a species. There are at least six types of hominids.
One of them describes the elves, or, I should say, "modern elves."
Who are these elves? What distinguishes them from normal humans?
First blush? To be quick about it: autists, aspies, and willies (Williams Syndrome).
Ever see a zonkey? Or a liger? Evolution is up to creation like that regardless of our involvement: in principle, the genetic material is there for such speciation. The fact that we contribute to speciation is an additional component to an already complex process.
Our phenotype is the same way. The question is how far our narratives take us into arrangineering (yes, neologism) the genetic materials we are already in the complicated throes of.
The Internet represents a point of departure into hyperevolution (homo evolutis: "a hominid that takes direct and deliberate control over the evolution of her species") . Research chemicals play a significant part here as well.
Look at it this way. Imagine if all the ants in the world were connected communicatively, somehow, by some stroke of imagination. Let it be microvibrations, etc. But imagine if all the ants of this planet had real-time communication, from all of their hives/farms/etc. What would they discuss?
Now imagine us. Today I see "startup" safe-havens to "startup" restaurants. We are all building the Web following the same principles, shared horizontally. When nature is left to its devices, we get very peculiar speciation that has interesting geological backstory. But nevertheless, speciation is geologically bounded. We are the first, of a generic species template: homo evolutis, to experience geologically unbounded real-time phenotype transfers. What might this say for the genetic materials which presumably draw a line in the "nature/nurture" debate?
We may need to consult our Epigenetics textbooks (or that PDF). Generally the D&D 3.5 Player's Handbook is a good guide for differentiating, in a modern context, elves from humans from dwarves from halflings from catfolk from (synthetic? stem cell?) vampires, etc.
