Aah, the license plate. They may look like ordinary pieces of metal used to identify a car at first glance, but each one tells a certain story (at least, the ones used in many North American jurisdictions).

I have a small-sized collection of them; I began collecting them back in 1999, when I was but in the 6th grade........ it's a passing interest for me now, but it's still kinda there.

My fave plate designs:

I love licence plates. Canada has a variety as well. I also like the American and European ones.

But unfortunately many states have went to a hideous flat font instead of using embossed characters which makes them lose their character. The condensed-width font is especially bad.

I'm not a license plate collector, but I do have an appreciation for them for nostalgic purposes. I would love to get hold of a pair of CA plates from the 1984 Olympics. They were only made for a short time, and very few are still seen.

There's a house in Simi Valley, CA, which is completely roofed with 1932 California license plates! There was a train wreck in the area, and I guess it was decided not to salvage some of the freight; including the shipment of 1932 plates to Los Angeles County. So they lay there in the ravine, and people started taking them to use for whatnot, as the Great Depression was on, and nobody could afford things like new roof shingles ;-) . It's still rain-tight to this day, and has survived many forest fires which took neighboring houses with wood roofs.

My state's plates have Mt. Rainier on it; a nice touch.

Darn. I thought it was going to be about goofy vanity plates. I saw one that confused me a bit. I couldn't tell if it said FUN GAL or FUNGAL. Amusing female person, or mycologist? Or amusing female mycologist?

My state went to flat plates. I like the embossed kind better.

I almost got a Tide one when we got our new one but it was $60 more. We have the choice between "God Bless Alabama" and "Stars Fell On Alabama". I got the stars one. We have a lot of choices. Alabama, Auburn, Helping Schools, Pro Life, Environment, etc.

I think Florida has around 100 different plates to choose from! As for me, my collection of clunkers all have the one with an orange in the middle and "In God We Trust" across the bottom.

I like the crater lake license plates, you know... for Oregon...

I'm still in Florida right now, though. I like their license plates as well, since they have oranges on it.

Northwest Territories plates are shaped like a polar bear.
