Yes, I was thinking just that. It made a complete rotation around the sun on the 14th of June also, and the 7th of September … relative to those days. Why do we care about the rotation today?

Since Earth reaches perihelion on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 07:48 UT*, that seems like an equally reasonable time to observe the advent of the "New Year".

(*That's 23:58 PST on Saturday, 2020/01/04 for people in California, by the way.)
