Why do so many of us have cartoon characters for avatars?

Just talking through my, er, hat here, I'll say maybe because cartoons lend themselves to compulsive obsession? My avatar is a picture of me standing on a very steep mountainside where there are fixed ropes to aid the hikers. It's a very scary but also very fun stretch of hiking. The full hike is about 14 km with 990 meters (almost one km) of elevation gain, but the segment with the fixed ropes is short, no more than maybe 25 or 30 meters linear in 4 segments. The rest of the hike is well-maintained trail.

The purpose of my avatar is to show my shocking resemblance to actor Hugh Laurie.

Cartoons are more anonymizing than images of real people. Also, some of us just aren't nice to look at.

i used to think that was you, dressed up :) until i did the right click+search.

even without the avatar bug, i had a sort of 'queue' for the next avatar i would have.

it does really suit you, i think. i don't think mine which is currently displayed it suiting me well, more like judging me silently with a disenchanted look that communicates a need for 'something else'.

what qualities, reduced to single words, does your perfect avatar need to express/exemplify?

^not sure really... for the most part i've had females or female figures as my avatars. i try aim for something fun, if not, a teeny bit bittersweet (or meant to be so, at least).

*velvet.

*glowing (if i were to have a gif avatar, one of my ideas was to maybe have alternating, soft lights like Spiderpig's.)

Well I think the use of cartoons would help convey aspects of ourselves that we would like others to know about/ associate with us.. For example, if I were to have a cartoon avatar, it would be snoopy from the peanuts cartoon- because I'm very similar in personality and temperament to him.. And I'm always in my own world/ day dreaming.. In my day dreams, I've been from heaven to China and many places in between
My current avatar is a famous violinist whose name escapes me right now.. But I liked her aura and her relationship to the violin in this particular picture.
