There's a type of music called elevator music. However out of all the elevators I've been in, I can't remember being in one that had music playing inside.

Smooth Operator would be a perfect song to be played in an elevator.

Yes there are, as this is where the colloquial term comes from. Also known as "muzak" from a company named Muzak Holdings who originated it for use in places like departments stores.

If you're in an elevator for just an apartment building or something, it's probably less likely it would be used there than in a department store elevator, for example.

I don't think I ever heard music played in elevators, even in hotels. Must be those really fancy-shmancy hotels where they leave little chocolates on your pillow. I would sooo love to get little chocolates on my pillow. Anyway, it's also called muzak, and I do hear it played all the time in retail stores and the mall. It's (usually) easily ignored but sometimes I catch myself humming or singing the words to a familiar tune.
