how much would it cost to make cheaper the technologies required to make feasible a space station suitable for a million or more people?

How can anyone cost analyze something so theoretical and vague?

Just out of curiosity, which Million people are you saving from the total 8 billion?

that's the point, to ask the unanswerable, in the hope that someone does the unthinkable....

You need some parameters at least. How long do you plan to stay in space? if 1 million people need 3 liters of water per day to live (aside from hygiene needs), that's a minimum of 3 million liters of fresh water per day. Where does that come from? And food?

The length of time you plan to spend in space will affect the amount of radiation shielding you'll need. as well as the amount of air required for breathing atmospheric pressure and and space based agriculture needs.

If you are looking to save 1000 people it would require a massive amount of money and research. I don't think you'll be able to convince world governments to fund a project that isn't going to save them. 1000 out of 8 billion isn't very many.

I was imagining there were spaceships travelling to and from earth with supplies.

it would be for a long period, of x months. again it would have to return for fuel and basic supplies.

But I'm too stupid to figure out which supplies (;

If you plan to periodically re-stock from earth that means you'd have to protect the people producing the supplies you need from whatever is making you think it will be better to live in space. Forcing people to stay behind while you and the privileged live a higher quality of live in space is going to be a very tough selling point.

Good point.

And even if it were defended with an army of drones and robots, it could be vulnerable due to the insane competitive nature of the human species.

Earth may be the best we have.

you would obviously have to pay people to stay behind. It could work, but again due to accelerating technologies, it's admittedly vulnerable to world governments.

also couldn't wealthy individuals trade in one of their 8 billion dollar yachts to form a corporation to fund a search for cheaper technologies to implement this?

Agreed that governments would not be interested necessarily.

The mega wealthy already have luxury bunkers with fresh food and clean water waiting for them in case of a crisis. Why would they pay more so that poor people can survive too?

I'm cynical but not that cynical.

I don't believe a yacht should be worth 8 billion dollars (the most expensive one is, you can look it up, and it is plated with gold, literally.)
I don't believe in silicon breasts.
I guess I'm an outlier.

Billionaire's get a kind of glitch when they have that kind of money - philanthropy, especially with their own money, is something they no longer even remotely consider. Any billionaire could step up and solve at least one of civilizations problems, but they don't.

I think it has more to do with simply being removed from average society...the longer it goes on the more detached they become. Just one example - Oprah decided to stop flying on commercial flights because even in first class, someone always wanted to say hello to her. A sensible solution (to her) was to buy her own jet and pay a full-time pilot and crew.
