Several countries once upon a time issued special coins to be used only within leper colonies, so their currency wouldn't enter into general circulation.

I love the British 20p coin because it has seven sides. More things should have seven sides.

Here's a new 7-sided piece for the 950th anniversary (!) of the Battle of Hastings:

I got a 10-cent Euro coin in change today (in Massachusetts) passing as a US penny. 8O We often get Canadian coins in change in New England, but I've never gotten a Euro coin before, and especially at a mismatched denomination like that.

(This may not quite fit under "Strange Coins of the World" but it certainly fits under strange local coins. What's the strangest item of currency you've ever come across in local circulation?)

Put an unfriendly Gorgon in your pocket:

That's from Macedonia, circa 400 BC.

The latest in a series of lovely astronomical coins from the Royal Australian Mint:

The designs are interesting, but in addition, these coins are scyphate -- bowl-shaped, to represent the dome of the sky:

I'm not sure I'm even picturing this one correctly -- I need to find another image.

It's apparently a new square coin from the Cook Islands that depicts the space-time continuum, with a magnetic sphere in the center -- wow.

Here's a strange Australian beauty: one ounce of gold, with a disk of Australian turquoise embedded in the center.

How about a hamster coin?

Specifically, Campbell's Dwarf Hamster from Mongolia.

This is a famous coin, because it's believed to show the oldest-known ancient Greek map:

Image

The obverse is a standard Persian-style running king image, but the reverse is thought to be a topographic map of the region around the Greek city of Ephesus, now on the west coast of Turkey. The coin is usually attributed to Memnon, a Persian admiral who captured Ephesus and fought Alexander the Great, around 340 BC.

This one isn't strange (except for being bimetallic) -- it's just a beauty: a 2-euro commemorative for the Bank of Finland.
