What's wrong with Edgar? At the beginning of the movie, he never seems like he'd ever do what he did to the cats.

He was afraid the cats would outlive him and not get the fortune because Madame was putting everything to the cats first in her will. He could have killed them but then there would be no movie so they had him take them to the country side. The guy was greedy.
