You have to wear green on St. Patrick's Day or you'll get pinched. Who invented this cruel idea?

Where?
I mean where are you, not where do they pinch, which does sound horrible.

A shellelagh is a club that sort of like a boomerang.

The Irish take a very hands-on approach when it comes to flirting.

A shillelagh was (and still is) a type club called a cudgel made out of blackthorn. But after the clubs were outlawed, they were lengthened and disguised as walking sticks. I know this because I own one. A real one from Ireland.

I think it’s supposed to have magical powers in the hands of a leprechaun.

I think you're suppose to beat the leprechaun with one so he gives up the treasure.Tricky little buggers they are.

I've never been pinched on St. Patrick's day for not wearing green. Which is good, because I HATE wearing green. I don't think this form of harassment is common or well-known where I live. It's probably more of an Irish-American thing.

If anyone even tried it I'd be screaming like another Irish mythical being: a banshee. When a banshee screams, it's supposed to be because someone is dying or about about to die.

It seems that in folklore a lot of fairy-type creatures that are mischievous like to pinch humans who can't see them, and then the humans swat at the spot thinking it was an insect that bit them, and are puzzled when they see nothing there.

But pinching hurts so it's not funny, it's mean.

In Australia, if you don't wear green you have to buy the beers.

Also, if you wear a hat into the public bar you have to buy the beers.
Australians will use any premise to get free beers, really.

I have no idea, but it doesn't happen here. I first saw it on The Simpsons.
