Probably worse than today. A lot worse.

Just an educated guess.

I think that might be true.

Considering that Autism wasn't known that long ago it's a question that is impossible to answer.

If autistic people were treats like ice cream sundaes are treats, neurotypicals would be the vanilla ice cream and autistic people would be the hot fudge, whipped cream and sprinkles.

I don't think anyone would have known about Autism back then, they would have been treated like people who had Mental illness were sadly.

Probably a lot worse than the majority of people treat us today.

If you were low functioning, then probably not very well. Life may have been better for aspies. From what I understand, at that time employers valued your working well and not waste time yapping etc over your being social and a team player and all that. There were also more opportunities to work on your own and in trades now gone. You might have been seen as eccentric but your contribution might still be valued.

Why do you say that?

Only have to go back to the 50s or so to see how ret*ds were treated (sent away to institutions) so I dont think autistics were treated any better in 1918.

Because vanilla ice cream on its own is boring. Toppings make it more tasty and interesting. So proverbially speaking, autistic people are the toppings on vanilla ice cream. :)

I can tell you how I was treated 40 years ago.

The doctor told my parents I was basically just unruly and they should basically beat it out of me. To which my Father obliged. I still have physical scars on my body. Psych told me and my parents, I'd most likely end up in jail when I got older.

There was no special education or concessions in school unless you were mentally challenged. I couldn't be mainstreamed and was to smart for special education. Their solution all through elementary school: I stayed in the library all day sorting books according to the Dewey decimal system. (I actually rather enjoyed this, but it's not an education of any kind.)

Lets not forget LSD was experimentally used to treat autism through the 60s and early 1970s.

I've blocked a lot out and there is a reason I moved 2,000 miles away.

How were people with mental illnesses and/or developmental disorders treat 100 years ago?

They were sent away, locked up, and their families forgot that they ever existed.

My Great Uncle Christopher was one of these. He died in his 30s about 20 years before I was born. I only recently learned of him through researching my ancestry on-line. I cannot verify why he was committed.

No surviving member of my family ever even knew he existed until I showed then the genealogy chart.

^^^That reminds me of the movie Rainman. The autistic was in an institution & his own brother didn't even know he existed till their dad died.
