now you made me go :study: the situation and it appears i spoke too soon in terms of there being a controversy as to who the vocalist was, the latest [as of 2019] info was that hugh downs was one of 250 odd vocalists recorded in audition for the voice, but that in the final edit they selected the vocal take done by the song's co-writer, fred ebb. at least that is what fred ebb himself claims. but the interview with hugh downs seemed pretty definitive in terms of his own claim to be the voice of it, sorry i can't remember why he did it, too many decades ago was the interview.
