Yeah, we have no fans in the house and it's bothering me

I put the fan heater on and sometimes use a hot water bottle at night to keep cool.

I'm glad the UK has finally got a bit of hot weather. Yes I know I have to work outside in it doing a physical job carrying heavy items backwards and forwards, but as long as I have a drink with me that I can keep filling up, I can actually cope with it. It's so much better than working outside in the freezing cold and the dark.

With the people who hate it I wonder why they leave their windows open and curtains pulled back during the hottest part of the day. They are superheating their houses so that their nights will be even more uncomfortable.

Something that was recommended to me a while back and that I have tried is opening the loft hatch at night. Theory is that some of the hot air in the house will rise into the loft space. In one house I lived in it made no difference - in another I thought that it did. Perhaps it depends on the design of the loft and whats going in up there.

Mrs V has an enormous fan operating tonight. The noise is awful.

i am a big believer in whole-house fans, those giant 20" jobs that suck the cool night air into the house and expel it up through the roof/attic.

I believe people in the UK/Ireland area should start buying air-conditioners.

based on current trends, if i was an investor there or elsewhere i'd start investing in air conditioning companies.

I can see the northern bits of Cornwall from here on a clear day so we are not that far away, tough by road it is a days journey!

This house is mostly stone with a few brick extensions built about 100 to 200 years ago but the main part is a lot more then double that in age. The main roof is slate.
This means that during the day this house stays cool, but later on by the time the sun goes down the stones and slate have accumilated the says heat and at night it is hot, even though outside is cool.

that is nearly the exact-same situation as with my metal tin can that i live in!

I know that tin gets very hot in the heat. We have a barn and sheds made mostly out of tin sheets.

As mentioned by another poster, close the windows and curtains when the morning looses its freshness.
Heat rises so opening the loft should help.It would work better if there was an open window up there so the heat could escape.
Put a fan in a window at night to pull in cool air, place it on the coolest side of the house.Usually the north.
Tall plants or vines on the sunny side will help cooling.Also use light colors if you paint the exterior.
Use cornstarch baby powder on the sheets and body to absorb moisture.
Wear loose breathable clothes and develop a taste for iced tea.Sweet with lemon.
Don’t use the stove to cook or clothes dryer when it’s hot.Have sandwiches instead and hang the clothes outside to dry or on drying racks.

learn to like being in your birthday suit in front of a stout fan. use a mister on your face/head/upper body as you are in front of the fan.
