Letters to the Editor: Don’t fall for the Republicans’ mental health dodge. The problem is guns
May 28, 2022 3 AM PT
To the editor: The only thing more predictable than these horrific mass shootings is the now standard response by the GOP that the problem isn’t guns, it’s “mental health issues.” (“Mass shooters aren’t mentally ill people who suddenly snap. They decide to kill,” Opinion, May 21)...
https://www.latimes.com/opinion/letters ... em-is-guns

My definition seems to be a little different.
In my mind, anyone who engages in a mass shooting is definitively "mentally ill", in this context, of course.

More on the theme;

Gun Control Or Mental Health Reform? UC Davis Researchers Say We May Be Focusing On Wrong Problem
By Adrienne Moore
May 26, 2022 at 11:11 pm

https://sacramento.cbslocal.com/2022/05 ... th-reform/

"
Dr. Bornhorst is a psychiatrist working with the UC Davis violence prevention research program — one of just a few in the country that is studying gun violence.

“Even if we had a perfect mental health system, how would we have stopped this? First of all, we have to identify these people,” Dr. Barnhorst said. “Who’s actually really high risk? Then we have to be able to engage those people in care. So imagine how many of these guys really want to participate in very intensive, very emotional, very expensive psychotherapy?”

Dr. Barnhorst added, “It’s going to be very hard to get them to do that, and they’re not going to qualify for voluntary treatment because most of these folks would not meet any kind of criteria that they would qualify for a treatment against their will.”

Researchers say mass shootings only account for one percent of gun violence in the U.S.

“The easier, more short-term solution is to limit these folks’ access to lethal weapons,” Dr. Barnhorst said.

Dr. Barnhorst said the focus shouldn’t necessarily be on why a shooting happens but on how it happens.

“The really high level big picture way is to address some of the social determinants of health like investing in people’s communities, having better resources in schools, providing more employment opportunities for people,” she said. “A lot of these kids we see on a more individual level, they’re disconnected, they’re invisible, they’re marginalized, they have trouble getting along with their peers. But investing in all those big social things can have an impact.”

What Gun Violence Does to Our Mental Health

Mass shootings and other types of trauma can have ripple effects not only for survivors but also for those who follow the news of the events.

By Christina Caron

"
Heather Martin was a senior at Columbine High School in 1999 when two gunmen, also teenagers, killed 13 people and wounded 21 more before taking their own lives. She ended up barricaded in a room for three hours. And although she wasn’t physically injured, she witnessed the aftermath of the shooting, which she described as “horrifying.”

Despite having survived such a traumatic event, she did not consider how deeply her mental health might have been affected. “I minimized my own experience and always thought, Someone has it worse. I should just be fine or be better,” she said.

But she wasn’t fine. Ms. Martin had recurring nightmares for years and eventually dropped out of college after developing an eating disorder and taking recreational drugs.

It wasn’t until the 10th anniversary of the shooting that she finally found the support she needed and reconnected with some of her classmates “who got it, who were also struggling, who didn’t judge me,” she said.

But beyond the statistics is a number that is harder to quantify: The large swath of people grappling with the psychological effects that stem from the violence.

The mental health toll doesn’t just affect those closest to gun violence. It also ripples through a community and the nation, said Erika Felix, an associate professor of clinical psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who has studied survivors of shootings.

“It’s felt everywhere,” she said. “We really have to look at this as a public mental health crisis.”

For survivors, victims’ families and those who live near the location of a shooting, the psychological effects can be intense and prolonged. They may include post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, self-harm and major depressive disorders.

But even among those who do not frequently experience gun violence or who have never been directly affected by a mass shooting, feelings of fear, anger or helplessness can arise. And studies have found that continually consuming news media after a tragedy can lead to acute stress.

“It affects our perceptions of vulnerability and risk,” Dr. Felix said.

As has been mentioned, bullying seems to be a major contributor.
Perhaps this might be addressed/mitigated?

The Federal government has been tossing words at the bullying problem for some time,

https://www.hrsa.gov/behavioral-health/ ... lying-spot

Also state governments, and other agencies, departments, and nonprofits.

He couldn't do a damn thing without easy access to guns. Maybe this should be addressed?

There's a movie called "We Need To Talk About Kevin", where a high school student takes his archery set into the school gymnasium and starts picking off students.

schools are gonna have to become armed camps, with strictly enforced and limited egress points. students are gonna have to get used to strict security protocols, no more lost ID cards/lanyards, things are gonna get pretty tough for those with students and parents with ADHD. and attacks on businesses in general are the next wave. i'm glad i'm relatively close to the exit.

I understand it's the expected cost of defending understricted access to firearms?

And, before any angry answers - between unrestricted access to firearms and full firearms ban, there's quite a lot of space that should be seriously explored in public debate.

Okay now local radio station broadcasts , that the shooter was outside the school for 12 mins , shooting . Before entering the school …after crashing his truck outside off the school . But school did not lock down ? And back door of school was propped open supposedly for persons working there whom preferred to smoke cigarette’s . And the distance across the entire town there supposedly takes less than 12 mins to cross in traffic. And police even
waited outside the school. While he was killing children .
But was supposedly barricaded in a classroom with more children . Dept of Justice has been called in to analyze the situation. 8O
And of course all this takes place 24 hrs before NRA convention..
Weird coincidence. Am just not buying coincidences in mass killing situations anymore . Even 9/11 dibocle had extra building falling straight down to the ground that were never struck . Claims of terrorists in middle east causing all this , just as we needed an excuse to destroy those countries . With military intervention . :skull:

If that doesn't give the conspiracy theorists a sugar high I don't know what will.

Speaking of things I don't know, since I don't watch TV I do not know if the view from where he crashed his grandmother's truck to the school buildings has been shown.
So, here it is on Google street view,

Lawyer says Uvalde teacher didn't leave a door open before the Texas school shooting, refuting another changing police claim
Jake Epstein
Tue, May 31, 2022, 3:17 PM·2 min read
https://news.yahoo.com/lawyer-says-uval ... 15967.html
"
A Robb Elementary School employee did not leave a door open to the building before last week's deadly school shooting in Uvalde, her lawyer said, refuting authorities' previous claims as the department faces backlash for its changing story around the massacre.

Attorney Don Flanary told San Antonio Express-News reporter Guillermo Contreras on Tuesday that the unidentifiable employee did prop open a door to the school, but shut it when she saw the gunman, who eventually entered and massacred 19 children and two adults on May 24.

Flanary told the Express-News that the employee remembers kicking away the rock used to prop open the door and pulling it shut as she spoke to police about the gunman shooting outside the school.

"She remembers pulling the door closed while telling 911 that he was shooting," he told the newspaper. "She thought the door would lock because that door is always supposed to be locked."

I don't understand why the police needed to wait for a key to enter the classroom, after he was inside it.
They said he shot through the door window to get access to the classroom.

A)
Why would police need a key if the door window was shot out?

B)
If the window wasn't shot out but the door was locked, forcing cops to wait for a key, that means he got into the classroom through an open door, started his attack, and .... locked the door behind him?

C)
Why couldn't cops shoot out the door window?

Nothing makes sense to me and yes, I'm a details-hyperfixating person.

But seriously, there is information in the details of a thing.
And sometimes those small bits of information can be of utmost significance.

You don't know the half of how much I hyperfixate ^ .

D)
The door was locked all along. He knocked on the locked door, and someone opened it even though there was a door window and he was standing there with a gun during a shooter-lockdown. Then he shut the door behind him and it remained locked.

???

Let's not forget that the custodial staff and the admin (Principal / VP) would all have master keys to every door.

All this says is that bullying is a major problem in society.
It creates a great deal of mental instability.
Bullies need to accept responsibility are responsible for the tragedies they help create.
